ReStart - Developing Effective Restorative Processes

What is ReStart?

ReStart is a partnership that has brought together the skills and experience of two independent organisations to promote good practice in restorative processes in the Education sector. They each have an excellent reputation for providing high quality consultancy and training in their own fields. ReStart is a joint venture between The Manor Consulting Group and KW Consultancy & Training Ltd.

The Manor Consulting Group has a reputation established over 15 years for providing quality business and marketing consultancy and training both in the private and public sectors. The Manor Consulting Group is retained by the Chartered Management Institute and The Chartered Institute of Marketing and is a registered practice of the Institute of Management Consultancy.

KW Consulting and Training Ltd has a reputation for the delivery of highly acclaimed training in Restorative Conferencing to members of the Youth Offending Teams in England and Wales, to multi-agency staff in Northern Ireland and for police officers and staff from youth justice teams in Scotland. The organisation has recently been providing equally highly rated training to teachers, education welfare officers, learning support assistants and others using restorative processes to deal with harmful behaviour in schools and to promote student inclusion.

What are restorative processes?

The concept of restorative processes is based on Restorative Justice that has been used in the context of the criminal justice system in the UK for a number of years with some success in reducing offending behaviour. More significantly, recent international research has shown that those who have been affected by harmful behaviour report far higher levels of satisfaction with the outcomes when restorative processes are used. Restorative processes acknowledge that harm is caused to people and relationships and attempt to repair some of that harm by enabling the parties involved to identify what their needs are and then to try to assist them in meeting those needs.

In our experience, the effective application of restorative processes in a holistic multi-agency approach has benefits in other sectors. For example, for Education and improving student inclusion.

How can ReStart help?

ReStart provides a complete training and support package to ensure the development of effective restorative processes.

Training

ReStart uses highly skilled and motivated trainers from the private, public and voluntary sectors to train people to facilitate restorative processes. Training is provided in all restorative processes that are appropriate for all those who are working to reduce harm either in the school environment or in the context of criminal justice. The training does not show favour to any restorative method, all of which are valid options but, instead, encourages delegates, when trained, to fit the services provided to the needs of the client.

The primary component is a 5-day workshop which in our experience is important to provide adequate time for all delegates to practice the skills of a facilitator in a safe learning environment. Another important aspect of the 5-day training is that it allows sufficient time for delegates to understand the importance of preparing those involved in, or affected by, harmful behaviour.

The old adage of 'proper preparation preventing poor performance' is of particular significance when strong emotions are likely to be involved. However, arrangements can be made to provide modular training for clients who are unable to set aside a block of 5 days at any one time.

Support and Consultancy

  • Introduction to restorative processes - ½ day
  • Consultancy support for implementation in the field
  • Ongoing support - tailored
  • Refresher workshops
  • Awareness training for line managers - 1 day
  • Train the trainer workshop

What does the Training involve?

Restorative processes training is provided for a minimum of 8 delegates in order that each can obtain the maximum benefit from the course and others' experience. Awareness training and restorative reprimand and final warning training can be arranged for at least 6 participants.

What Do Our Clients Say?

  • "An excellent course, thank you. I found it very 'educational'".
  • "All the course was brilliant. The practice element was most important as we had the opportunity to learn through 'doing'".
  • "A great course. The most useful aspect of it was the skills practice/role play that enabled me to develop an awareness of the emotions of those affected".
  • "I recommend you both as the ones to be trained in restorative practices by".
  • "Thanks for a very useful two days."
  • "Of the high standard now expected."
  • "I felt that the course was well run, and was very professional."
